‘Online Monitoring’: The Consumer Goods Giant Seeks to Capitalise On Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
As a product discovered more than 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the simple jar of Vaseline may not seem like an obvious target for digital platform algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a popular subject on TikTok has thrust it into the lead of an promotional upheaval, in which large companies are investing heavily in content creators and reducing expenditure on marketing items in traditional media.
The Path from Petroleum to Platforms
Originally produced in the 1870s by chemist Robert Cheeseborough, who observed drillers rubbing their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Currently, a wave of content from users have recorded its extensive utilization in “practical tricks”.
Hailed as a solution for polishing footwear or prolonging the scent of perfume, and also a remedy for squeaky doors. Users have even applied it to stop the scourge of crisp flavouring sticking to fingers.
Capitalising on the Conversation
Detecting the product’s new life online, strategists within the corporation amplified the hacks by asking their own scientists to test them and providing creators with the outcome data.
Suggestions that it lessened the burn from hot food on the lips were confirmed. Similarly supported were ideas it could extend fragrance and restore leather handbags. Proposals that it might brighten smiles or make eyelashes longer were disproven.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Outdoor advertising and television commercials would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. Yet this viral episode has persuaded leaders to ramp up funding for content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to inform business strategy has been dubbed “social listening”. The company's chief executive, recently appointed, has suggested it is aiming to spend a full fifty percent of its huge ad budget on social media content.
Shifting to Modern Engagement
The company's social media lead, who is heading the digital initiative, said the company was simply adapting to new ways of connecting with customers. She said interacting online “without dampening the fun” was paramount.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This has perpetually been our aim as brands, since the era of community gossip and sharing usage tips.
“The trend is shifting from a broadcast model, where we would just send out ads … Now it’s many conversations, diverse communities. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these communities feel niche, but they’re not.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by consumers, mentioned by individuals, that fosters reliability and pertinence. Content makers are key. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Fundamental Consumption Turn
The approach indicates dramatic transformations happening in audience habits, with Gen Z and millennial audiences devoting greater hours to digital networks than traditional TV, print, or radio.
The transition is visible in falling revenues for traditional media advertising. Across Britain, ad revenues for primary networks have dropped substantially in actual value since the end of the last decade.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
This further signifies a blurring of media roles as large companies almost become production houses themselves, linking up with hundreds of content creators to boost their products.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers away from some legacy media and their time is increasingly on digital video and image apps than they are watching live TV or reading print.
“Numerous corporations inform us audiences believe endorsements from the individuals they follow more than they trust ads. That’s a consistent trend.”
He noted companies can reduce costs by targeting content creators over expensive broadcast campaigns, which also permits simpler message refinement to see what works.
Such methods are increasing. Marketing investment on digital creator partnerships is increasing four times faster than total media spending. Across the United States, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is expected to hit multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Despite the huge changes, executives said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as networks still held the capability to shape the national conversation.
Sykes said: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. It’s not about those broadcasters saying: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ It concerns who commands eyeballs … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
